Course Information

Course Content Level: Intermediate

This course provides an in-depth, evidence-based overview of somatic therapy for mental health professionals. The content covers the historical development and foundational principles of somatic therapy, including the work of Pierre Janet, Wilhelm Reich, Peter Levine, Pat Ogden, and Ron Kurtz. The materials explain the core concepts of embodiment, neuroplasticity, and nervous system regulation, and detail the mind-body connection in trauma and psychological disorders. Key physiological mechanisms-such as the autonomic nervous system (ANS), vagus nerve, cranial nerves, and neuroplasticity-are explored, along with the impact of early attachment and interoception on emotional regulation. Practical somatic techniques, including grounding, resourcing, breathwork, mindful movement, titration, and pendulation, are described in detail, with guidance on ethical considerations and cultural sensitivity. The training is designed to equip mental health practitioners with the knowledge and skills to integrate somatic approaches into their practice safely and effectively.

This online continuing education course is designed for licensed professional counselors, mental health professionals, social workers, and other related professionals seeking to enhance their skills and knowledge. Participants should hold a minimum of a master's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field. Prior completion of foundational coursework in counseling theories and techniques is also recommended to maximize the learning experience.
